LA PAZ, Baja California Sur — The future of Baja California Sur’s oceans, fisheries, and coastal communities took center stage during the 3rd Foro de Pesca Deportiva, organized by FONMAR in La Paz, BCS.

The event brought together leaders from the sportfishing industry, commercial fishing communities, conservation advocates, captains, marina operators, and fishing organizations from across Baja California Sur to discuss one of the most important topics facing the region today: protecting the future of our fisheries while creating sustainable opportunities for future generations.

Under the leadership of FONMAR President Martín Inzunza, the forum created an open and constructive environment where both the sportfishing and commercial fishing sectors were able to share concerns, experiences, and possible solutions regarding the challenges currently affecting Baja’s coastal waters.

One of the strongest messages throughout the forum was the growing awareness within many small commercial fishing communities that traditional large-scale net fishing practices have had a much greater impact on marine ecosystems than many previously realized. Several fishermen discussed how they are now beginning to implement more selective sportfishing-style techniques within their commercial fisheries in an effort to fish more responsibly and reduce unnecessary damage to ocean habitats.

This shift toward more conscious fishing practices represents a major cultural change for many coastal communities that depend on the ocean for survival.

Participants also expressed serious concerns about the impact of large industrial fishing operations entering Baja California Sur waters with massive nets that remove enormous amounts of marine life from local ecosystems. Local fishermen explained that unlike industrial fleets, most commercial fishermen in Baja Sur operate on a much smaller scale and have already reduced or eliminated the use of traditional large nets.

Many attendees noted that local fisheries have experienced declining bait populations and reduced fish abundance over the last several years — issues being felt from nearly every coastal town in the region.

Representatives and attendees traveled from communities including La Paz, Loreto, Magdalena Bay, San Carlos, La Ribera, Cabo San Lucas, San José del Cabo, and Mulegé — all sharing similar concerns about declining fish populations and the long-term sustainability of Baja’s marine resources.

Organizations and industry leaders present included representatives from the IGFA, Tag Cabo Sportfishing, the Federación de Pesca Deportiva, Top Anglers Sportfishing, and Pisces Sportfishing, along with many other respected members of Baja California Sur’s sportfishing community, including captains, guides, conservation advocates, marine biologists, and commercial fishermen — all united by the shared goal of protecting the future of Baja California Sur’s oceans and fisheries for generations to come.

What made this forum especially powerful was the fact that despite coming from different sectors of the fishing industry, nearly everyone in attendance agreed that change is necessary and that cooperation between sportfishing and commercial fishing communities will play a critical role moving forward.

The conversations throughout the event reflected a growing understanding that healthy oceans benefit everyone — from local commercial fishermen and tourism operators to visiting anglers and future generations who deserve the opportunity to experience Baja’s incredible fisheries.

Forums like this demonstrate that meaningful progress can happen when communities come together under one roof to openly discuss challenges and search for real solutions.

A special thank you goes to FONMAR and President Martín Inzunza for organizing this important event and helping unite so many voices from across Baja California Sur’s fishing industry.

The future of Baja’s fisheries depends on the actions we take today — and this forum showed that many people are ready to be part of that change.
