Temperature gradient

Rate of surface temperature change per 10 km, computed from actual MUR grid values (0.05° sampling) in a 1° box around the sample point (Offshore of La Ribera). Stronger gradients mark boundaries between water masses; they are not evidence of fish.

East Cape seasonal fishing calendar

Historical seasonal patterns from cited sources, reviewed by our editors. This is not a report of current catches; see dated reports below for verified recent fishing.

The East Cape calendar is awaiting editorial review. No unreviewed seasonal ratings are shown.

East Cape field observations

Editor-approved observations from captains and named sources, shown with their report date. Older entries are historical, not today’s conditions.

No approved East Cape observations yet.

Reading the water around East Cape

Compare water along the eastern coastline with water farther offshore. Conditions near shore can differ from the offshore analysis, especially where the coastal grid meets land.

MUR combines multiple satellite and in-situ inputs into a gridded surface analysis. The newest seven days may be revised. Point readings show estimated analysis uncertainty when NOAA provides it; they are not onboard thermometer measurements.

Ocean map questions

Is this a live water-temperature measurement?

No. This is the latest available daily JPL MUR analysis distributed by NOAA CoastWatch. Its analysis timestamp appears beside the map and each point reading. It is not a real-time sensor feed, weather forecast or fishing prediction.

How can temperature breaks help anglers?

Changes in surface temperature can help describe boundaries between water masses. They do not prove bait or fish are present. The SST color field is shown here; a separate quantified gradient layer is not yet available.

Does the map show a verified East Cape catch report?

The temperature layer is ocean information, not a catch report. The dated magazine stories below are separate editorial sources and retain their original publication dates.

Are currents, chlorophyll, waves and fishing seasons included?

Not in this initial release. Those layers need separately verified sources, timestamps and licensing. Regional species calendars need evidence and editorial review. No modeled conditions, seasonal averages or invented values have been used as substitutes.
